4 Common Postures of Relating to God

“With” by Skye Jethani

  1. Life Under God
  2. Life Over God
  3. Life from God
  4. Life for God

Each of these four postures seeks to exert control over the unpredictability of life, namely, the universal human experience of fear and suffering.   (From “With” by Skye Jethani)

  1. Life Under God – (Superstition) Sees God through lenses of cause and effect…I obey His commands and he blesses my life
  2. Life Over God – (Deism/humanism) Desires to control God by following rules and principles
  3. Life from God – (Consumerism) Desires God’s blessings, but not really God Himself
  4. Life for God – (Impact over relationship) Life’s worth is determined by amount accomplished for God

The deceiver turns…

Love    →   Lust
Enjoyment   →  Objectification
Contentment        Jealousy
Generosity        Control
Rest        Slothfulness
Authority       Authoritarian
Covenant relationships    Contracts

Contractual Relationships are marked by:

Under God – cause and effect mentality (Superstitious/shallow)

Over God – principles without heart (control)

From God – did you deliver the goods? (entitlement)

For God – mission above all else (impact over relationship)

1: Life Under God

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God…” 1 Peter 5:6
“Now this is the commandment…that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you…that you may fear the LORD your God.” Deuteronomy 6:1,2

2: Life Over God

“And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over [it]'” Genesis 1:28
“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments…you will understand…and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:1,5

3: Life From God

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” John 6:53
“And he said to me, ‘Son of man…eat this scroll…’ So, I opened my mouth, and he gave me this scroll to eat.'” Ezekiel 3:1,2

4: Life For God

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” Matthew 28:19

Redemption in Christ

Life Under God

We are to fear the Lord, for it is the beginning of wisdom (true worship marked by humility)

Life Over God

We have overcome by the blood of the Lamb and are called to live with both authority and dominion

Life From God

We are to be obsessed with Christ, consuming Him each day and in every situation

Life For God

He has made us a kingdom and priests meant to share the gospel throughout the whole earth

Matthew 28
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Life with God

“The Life with God posture is predicated on the view that relationship is at the core of the cosmos: God the Father with God the Son with God the Holy Spirit. And so, we should not be surprised to discover that when God desired to restore his broken relationship with people, he sent his Son to dwell with us.” – Jethoni

– Life is meant to be lived with God

– Blessing = Presence of God

– Blessing does not = stuff

– God walks with us through fear and suffering

How do we live life with God?

By moving out of contracts & bargains and back into covenant relationship with Him.

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. 10 “Be still, and know that I om God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. – Psalm 46

Life with God with Others

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them…'” Genesis 1:26

The fall has alienated us from:

– God (relational distance)
– Ourselves (nakedness and shame)
– Others (fear, self-protection, isolation)
– Nature (thorns and pain, death)

Beloved, we love because He first loved us…

The Greatest Commandment:

– Love God
– Love yourself
– Love your neighbor

1 John 3
11 For this ‘is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like Coin, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is o murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does Gods love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but indeed and in truth.
