You know the old phrase “There are two types of people in this world.” Really? With all the diversity on our planet, there’s only two kinds of people? At the same time aren’t we all pretty much the same? What about that other old phrase: “People are people”?
The scriptures indicate that people are people: “There are none righteous, not even one.” And according to Paul’s letter to the Galatians: “There is neither Jew nor Greek…male nor female, for you are all one in Christ.” However, in that same letter we are told that there are two, and only two, directions that people can choose in their life: Life submitted to our “natural” desires or life guided by the Spirit of Jesus.
He says there is an indicator revealing which of those paths we are on. It isn’t the color of our skin, our anatomy, our nationality or even our personality or our politics. It is the character secreting from our lives. Paul calls it “fruit.”
Life in the Spirit reveals itself through natural production of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. What do those characteristics actually look like? How can I be sure that they are a part of my life? What is the Spirit guided, fruit-full life? Let’s figure it out together this summer.
